“Round Head” Plastic Surgery Seems Excessive

We are told to put our babies down to sleep on their backs because it is safer for them and reduces the rick of SIDS. Most parents bringing home a newborn follow what they have been told to do in the fear of hurting or messing up their child. Being good parents they follow the rules and put their baby down to sleep on his back. Now that we have reduced the risk of SIDS by placing the baby on his back we have created another problem. Flat spots on the head. It occurs when your baby spends to much time on his back and doesn’t get enough tummy time or re-positioning.

I recently read this article on Kotaku about Plastic Surgery to fix having a flat head. It reminded me of the growing number of babies I have seen wearing a specially designed helmet to fix the very same problem.

Back on wheels

Today I was able to have a test practice with the Rockin’ City Roller Girls derby team. It was so much fun. Everyone was really nice and friendly. It was also great just to be back on skates. I don’t have a lot of free time when I can strap on a pair of skates and practice. I definitely want to continue to practice once a week. It’s such great exercise. I haven’t been doing a very good job of running a few times a week. It would be good to have a mandatory practice once or twice a week. I would love to make their Wednesday practices work but I’m not sure i can get there in time after. I may just have to give it a try to see how it goes. I better step it up with the running as well. I’m going to try and get a couple of runs in this week due to the holiday. Hopefully it won’t be so cold that it deters me from running. I do not like to be cold.

Im really excited to join their league in the beginning of the year. It’s great to have a league closer to where I live. Driving way down to south Austin every week was just going to be to far for me. It will also be fun to see the league change as it grows. It’s fairly new and it has a great group of ladies so far so I think everyone will see good things from them.

After skating today I realized I need some new gear. My wrist guards look like they may be unraveling. They are also pretty worn. I’m going to have to make a list of things I would like to replace so I don’t forget and can slowly replace one thing at a time. I also notices the Velcro strap on my skates is pulling away from the leather. The stitching that holds it on is pulling loose. Hopefully they will last a while longer. New skates are not on the list anytime soon. 🙂

Well I hope everyone else is having a great Sunday. I’ll try to post some more and stop disappearing.

Saturday run, Monday lunch

Saturday morning’s run went ok. We ran about 6.7 miles in 1 hour and 35 minutes I think. Not my best run time and we miss judged the halfway point. I definitely need to start running during the week again. Me knee was starting to ache right at the end so we walked the last quarter of a mile.

On Sunday I made a yummy chicken salad for lunch with left overs for Monday’s lunch. It was so yummy. I really love chicken, apples, and green grapes. Who knew fruit went so well with chicken. It was also a great paleo lunch option.

Here is what was in my salad
-chicken
-green grapes
-honey crisp apple
-mayo
-hardboiled eggs
-dash of garlic salt and onion powder
I think next time I might try adding some diced onion to it. What variations do you try?

7 miles tomorrow

Tomorrow I get back to running. I think it’s been about a month and I really need to start running again and keep up with it. I’m going to be running 7 miles I think. I really hope I do ok seeing its been so long. That’s about it for tonight. I just want to try and keep up with posting something every day if I can. More to come tomorrow.

A few of my favorite things. Paleo first

I decided to start back up my blog by writing about some of my favorite things right now. The first one is going to be about eating paleo. It all started one day at work during lunch. As I was waiting to heat up my lunch one of my co-workers had just taken something out of the microwave that looked really good. When I asked her what it was and she said it was her left overs from diner the night before. I told her it looked good and she continued to tell me that it was a 6 week meal challenge called the Paleo Challenge. So I decided to look into it some more. I had just had a baby in the last 5 months and wanted to do something to help loose that weight and just be healthier in general.

I started the 6 week challenge and followed the first 3 weeks of the plan. By week 3 I was feeling pretty good and not craving food as much as I used to. I continued to keep eating paleo, for the most part, after the 6 weeks were over. I had been training to run a 10K with my friend and I just felt so much better I figured why go back to the way it was. So it’s been about 9-10 months since I started. I’ve lost about 20-25 lbs and am in the smallest size clothes I have ever worn. I feel great and it’s very exciting to be able to find clothes that fit me right. I had to go buy some new pants recently and found 4 pairs that I liked, and still like. Usually I try some one find one pair I think are ok, maybe 2 and then get home and a week later I don’t like the fit. The only problem I have now is I don’t really have a lot of clothes that fit. So I have to figure out a way to remedy that without spending a ton of money.

I should also mention that for the most part I have continued to eat paleo and pretty much made it a lifestyle change. I do still have the occasional wheat item, however I did not return to my previous way of eating. That might not be for everyone but it might help you feel better while you get your exercise routine down. What worked for you when trying to loose baby weight or just get in shape?

First Tabata Workout

Today is day 8 in the squat challenge which is a rest day. I decided to finally try a tabata workout. My legs probably thought I just did another set of squats because I decided to do my workout on our exercise bike. I did 4 minutes pedaling my hardest on the bike. With a 30 sec warmup and cool down. Boy was it hard. I can see how it will help. I can’t wait to watch my stats improve. I am going to use my blog to keep my distance record to watch my improvements. Today in one 4 min session I went .8 miles. Tomorrow I plan to do a run and my squats for the day. I may try another tabata on Friday or Sunday.

Day 6, still going

Day 6 of the squat challenge and I’m still going strong. Today I did 75 squats. When I was half way there I started thinking I can’t imagine what it will be like when I have to do over a hundred. Right now I couldn’t see myself doing that many. I’m excited to still be going strong and look forward to tomorrow’s squats. Hopefully I will get a chance to run as I didn’t run all last week like I wanted to. Hopefully tomorrow morning or late evening I can get a run in. Maybe I will test the new jogging stroller my friend got me.

We are going to the Ear, nose, and throat doc for our little guy tomorrow. Hopefully we can get his ears fixed so he doesn’t have so many ear infections. I know tubes sound scary to some people but we have already been through one surgery with him so I’m not to scared. Plus if it helps him I’m all for it. I just want the little guy to feel better.
